10 Good Tips to Avoid Scam Diets Forever

by Billy Chambers

1. Avoid any scam diet that claims you don't have to exercise in an effort to lose weight. This is an outrageous lie that they tell because it will get you to buy. You must exercise, not only to lose weight, but to keep it off. Don't buy into it!

2. Avoid any scam diet that claims that you can lose an inordinate amount of weight in a short time. Experts will let you know that losing any more than two pounds every week is going overboard and will be nearly impossible to keep off.

3. Avoid any scam diet that claims eating right is not necessary and you can pig out to your hearts delight as long as you take this or that Eating right isnt necessarily fun, but it is needed if the weight is going to come off and stay off!

4. Avoid any scam diet that claims you dont need to have goals or aim for a certain milestone to achieve your dream weight. Every person needs to know where they are going to have any chance of getting there. This is another claim made to make you believe you dont have to work hard.

5. Avoid any scam diet that claims you need to eliminate all of one type of food or another and go on a strictly liquid diet. This may work for a little at first, but then you will be stuck in a rut a few weeks down the road not losing any weight, getting agitated and losing muscle.

6. Avoid any scam diet that claims that you must eat only one meal a day or less and cut out all snacking to achieve your desired weight. These "starvation" tactics will work well right away, but they will damage your metabolism and make you lose faith in short fashion. Eating less in frequent sittings will work better.

7. Avoid any scam diet that claims that you must purchase this supplement or that shake in addition to their diet plan. Not only are vitamins not truly needed for most people to lose weight, but they are likely offered just for the seller to get fatter pockets.

8. Avoid any scam diet that guarantees their diet system to work because all people respond to this diet! We are all unique and dont all lose weight in the same ways, just because you fail with one doesnt mean you cant lose weight. Trial and error .

9. Avoid any scam diet that tells you how easy it is to remove or eliminate all calories or fats from your diet. You dont need to stop all fats, your body needs some of that and the same goes for calories. What you need is to work out and eat less in more frequent sittings.

10. Avoid any scam diet that makes a statement that seems shady or not smart to you. It is that easy, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Dont spend all your time with these scam diets, use your time to develop good eating and exercising habits.

Carb Blocker, A Solution to Weight Loss?

Carb Blocker, A Solution to Weight Loss?

by Kristy Haugen

Low carb diets restrict the consumption of carbohydrates. The difference between the Atkins and the South Beach diet is within the amount of restriction. The induction phase of the Atkins diet restricts most carbohydrates while the South Beach diet allows good carbohydrate consumption. These diets can really put ones will power to the test. Why?

The human bodys primary source of energy is glucose. Glucose is derived from the breakdown or hydrolysis of carbohydrates that are consumed. Limiting carbohydrate consumption forces the body to use fat or protein as an energy source. Decreased carbohydrate consumption may leave you feeling tired and easily fatigued until the body adjusts to the change.

The word carbohydrate arose because molecular formulas of these compounds can be expressed as hydrates of carbons which yield a basic carbohydrate empiric formula of (CH2O)n. Carbohydrates consist mainly of the combination of two chemistry functional groups: the carbonyl and the hydroxyl group. Carbohydrates exist in different forms such as monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides.

Monosaccharides are usually called simple sugars. These simple sugars cannot be broken down or hydrolyzed into a simpler form (glucose). A complex carbohydrate refers to one or more linked simple sugars that require digestion for absorption.

Oligosaccharides contain at least two monosaccharide units. Oligosaccharides may be referred to as disaccharides or trisaccharides depending on how many units of monosaccharides the compound contains. Maltose and sucrose (table sugar) are considered disaccharides.

Polysaccharides contain many monosaccharide units. In order for the body to use polysaccharides, these compounds must be broken down into a simpler monosaccharide form. Examples of polysaccharides are starch and cellulose (fiber).

Dietary carbohydrate digestion occurs mainly in the mouth and small intestine. During mastication (chewing) the salivary glands secrete the enzyme alpha-amylase which is referred to as ptyalin. Alpha-amylase briefly acts on dietary carbohydrates in the mouth to hydrolyze starch into simple sugars such as glucose. In fact, if you chew on a carbohydrate long enough you may taste sugar. This is a result of salivary amylase hydrolyzing the carbohydrate into a simpler sugar.

Mastication increases the surface area of the food for alpha-amylase to act upon. This allows the enzyme alpha-amylase to work more efficiently in carbohydrate digestion. However, the food does not remain in the mouth for a long time so only a small portion of starch is hydrolyzed there.

Once the chewed food has been swallowed into the stomach, carbohydrate digestion halts temporarily. This occurs because alpha-amylase is inactivated by the high acidic environment of the stomach. However, carbohydrate digestion will resume once the chyme (food mass and gastric juices of the stomach) enters the small intestine.

The acidic contents emptied into the small intestine are neutralized by bicarbonate secreted by the pancreas. The pancreas will then secrete alpha-amylase to continue carbohydrate digestion. Carbohydrate digestion is finished when the mucosal lining of the upper jejunum and duodenum absorb the bulk of the dietary sugars in the form of monosaccharides.

Now that we have a good understanding of what a carbohydrate is and the importance of the carbohydrate in the body, maybe an extreme low carb diet isnt the answer for weight loss. Extreme diets whether they are low carb or high protein can put the body to the test. Carbohydrates may be a necessary evil, but the body relies heavily on carbohydrates for energy. Instead of testing ones will power, using a weight loss supplement called a carb blocker may be a better option.

Carb blockers are a weight loss supplement recently introduced into the weight loss world. Carb blockers claim to block the enzyme alpha-amylase. If the enzyme alpha-amylase is blocked, then carbohydrate hydrolysis is affected. By blocking the enzyme, you block the breakdown of the carbohydrate which affects absorption of the monosaccharide. How so? If the carbohydrate is of complex origin, the enzyme must be secreted to break down the carbohydrate into a simpler form for absorption. In theory, the carb blocker should indeed help to block carbohydrates from being absorbed.

Phaseolus vulgaris is the active ingredient in carb blockers that comes from the white kidney bean. Phaseolus vulgaris interferes with the pancreas ability to secrete the enzyme alpha-amylase. Subsequent studies do prove that Phaseolus vulgaris does in fact inhibit the enzyme alpha-amylase.

Carb blockers are another option for weight loss. However, permanent weight loss requires you to make changes to your lifestyle. If you do not change your lifestyle then no matter what diet or supplement you choose, weight loss is temporary and short lived. This also means that if you choose a low carb diet, make sure that this diet can be done. Many people fail the low carb diets because of extreme commitments.

Low Carbohydrate, High Fat?

Low Carbohydrate, High Fat?

by Belinda Osgood

One can choose low carbohydrate and high fat, but the wise, health-conscious low carbohydrate diner has the same choices to make as any other healthy eater. That is, to choose better foods and better cooking methods.

For the person wanting to eat low carbohydrate, this means choosing good oils, steaming rather than frying, buying lean cuts of meat and fat-reduced cheese, such as Edam. These exact same questions face anyone trying to maintain a healthy eating lifestyle.

Full fat cream cheese, sour cream, cream, and butter are the better than their fat-reduced counterparts for the purposes of a low carbohydrate diet. This is in part due to low fat versions tending to contain a much higher carbohydrate content. However, the main reason is because the body burns fat. Excess sugars, which are ingested and cannot be used by the body, are converted to fat - that is, they create fat. Without an intake of refined sugars, the body is then forced to burn its own fat stores for energy. This is why many people turn to a low carbohydrate diet in order to shed their excess weight.

This is where a lot of the myth begins that low carbohydrate means high fat. Again, the choice lies in how much of these foods you wish to put into your everyday diet. A normal eater may slather cream cheese on bagels, butter on bread, and sour cream on potatoes. Removing the carbohydrate-rich starchy foods from this equation does not increase the fat intake. When taken into context, low carbohydrate is only high fat if you choose to eat that way.

Low carbohydrate is an eating lifestyle, which eliminates simple sugars and drastically reduces complex sugars, such as those found in grains, rice, and bread. This eating lifestyle could almost be termed as low processed foods. That is, foods which are as natural as possible. Vegetables, meats, and dairy are the mainstays of this diet, topped up with wise carbohydrate choices such as fruit and potato (rather than bread or pasta).

Low carbohydrate eating may seem at face value as though it is high in fat. In fact, given the choices between highly processed, sugar-laden modern foods and the natural form of animal and vegetable products, one should not have too much difficulty in seeing where improvements, for the sake of ones health, are made.

The Many Faces of Yoga

The Many Faces of Yoga
by Andy Bowen

Bhakti Yoga This is the path of pure spiritual devotion, love and surrender to God.

Hatha yoga Introduced by Yogi Swatmarama in the 15th century, Hatha Yoga is considered a preparatory stage towards Raja Yoga. Hatha yoga concentrates on physical purification to ensure that the body is fit enough to practise "Higher Meditation". Hatha is what most Westerners would associate with Yoga.

Chair Yoga Chair Yoga, not surprisingly, is a gentle form of Yoga practised whilst sitting in a chair (or standing using a chair for support). Chair Yoga is most commonly practised by people who are unable to perform other types of yoga for health or fitness reasons.

Sahaja Yoga A unique method of meditation based on an experience called Self Realization (Kundalini awakening) that can occur within each human being. Created by Nirmala Srivastava, or "Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi" or "Mother" as she is also known by followers Sahaja Yoga also refers to the Sahaja Yoga International Organization which she founded in 1970 in Nargol, India.

Anusara Yoga Anusara Yoga is a style of Hatha Yoga, developed by John Friend in 1997 with a Tantric Philosophy.

Iyengar Yoga Created by B.K.S. Iyengar, Iyengar Yoga uses props, such as belts and blocks, as aids in performing its postures. It is another form of Hatha Yoga and is considered a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern-day life.

Karma Yoga One of the four pillars of yoga Karma Yoga focuses on the adherence to duty while remaining detached from the reward. In other words, one can attain Moksha (salvation) or love of God (bhakti) by performing duties in an unselfish manner for the pleasure of the Supreme.

Kundalini Yoga A physical and meditative discipline, comprising a set of simple techniques that uses the mind, senses and body to create a communication between "mind" and "body".

Bikram Yoga Bikram yoga is done in a room heated to 105?F (40.5?C) and accompanied by specific dialogue. It is a style of yoga developed by Bikram Choudhury and consists of 26 yoga postures (or asana) and two breathing exercises lasting 90 minutes.

Kriya Yoga Kriya Yoga consists of a number of yogic techniques designed to bring about a profound state of tranquility and God-communion.

Laughter yoga Laughter yoga uses gentle yoga-breathing and stretching exercises, rhythmic clapping and chanting of Ho Ho Ha Ha Ha in unison. In this simulated laughter turns into real laughter. Sessions last about 20 to 30 minutes and are non-religious, non-sectarian, and non-political.

Power Yoga Power Yoga is the popular term used to describe the style of yoga taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. The asana sequences are largely based on the book Yoga Makaranda. It is an energetic, aerobic style and was originally taught for teenage boys to channel youthful, restless energy and hormones.

Kirshnamacharya then taught a deeper practice as students matured; the intention being that as people mature in their practice, the practice evolves into the more focused, stable, meditative aspects of yoga asana.

Japa Yoga Another spiritual discipline involving the meditative repetition of a mantra or name of God. Usually the mantra or name is spoken softly, enough for the practitioner to hear it, or more rarely it is spoken purely within the reciters mind. Japa is commonly performed whilst sitting in a yogic meditation posture (said to improve concentration) but this is not always the case in all traditions. It is present in varied forms within most religions in the world, although the Dharmic Religions generally give more emphasis to it as a specific discipline.

Raja Yoga Raja Yoga is the system of yoga outlined by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras. It is also sometimes referred to as Ashtanga (eight-limbed) yoga because there are eight aspects to the path to which one must attend. Raja yoga is concerned principally with the cultivation of the mind using meditation to further ones acquaintance with reality and finally achieve liberation.

Yin Yoga Developed by Paul Grilley Yin Yoga is a Taoist application of Hatha Yoga which "emphasizes the critical difference between Yin and Yang tissues of the body". The postures in Yin Yoga gently stretch and releases tissues around major joints and also the joints themselves. Postures are held for anywhere between 1 min and 10 min depending upon experience and ability.

So as you can see there are many types of Yoga. Take your time to choose the one which is best suited to you. Yoga is an enjoyable and uplifting activity and it would be a shame to tarnish your experience with a by following a discipline which you you not enjoy.

You may also want to find out about other types of Yoga such as Dahn Yoga and Yoga Nidra and also about the various Yoga Accessories you might need.
